I have two Apex 435s. I have an M-Audio Firewire 410 Interface. I have stands, cords, a P-popper. Everything is falling into place. Excellent...
Why the Apex 435s after so much nattering about the other mics? Research and price. I get more response and warmer tone for 40 euros less? Ok. That's fine by me. I'd love to copy my brother's home studio, I'd love to have his nice overflowing bank account as well. I have a feeling that this is more than enough for my demo and composing.
So starting the recording tomorrow. Too knackered tonight. Excitement and joy!

You knew Kim, and say sweet things about her. Only a saint could have lived with Keith Moon. Only a near-saint could have played with him. But you could be a street rat to hang out with him and have fun. Just spent some time in Austin with Mac and he seems OK now. Such a fabulous man.
Austin is so great. How can you stand boring old Paris, France? Only kidding.
Your recording kit. The microphone is important. Important too is allowing 'air' in the space you choose to record in. If you get a chance and have enough tracks, try two takes of guitar, piano or vocals (or whatever it is you are recording in acoustic space) and for the second take position the mic further away than sounds right in the earphones. Sometimes it adds just the right amount of what the editor of Tape-Op magazine calls 'depth-of-field' (a photography term).
I could gush and go on about how I danced around my apartment when I saw your comment. But I won't. Cos I'm cool (yeah, right).
I miss Austin sometimes. Probably wouldn't even recognize it now, even though I left a scant four years ago. I miss the live music (took it for granted) and the food. Can't seem to get good tex-mex in France. Most of all, I miss my friends.
I imagine it must have been very difficult to play with Keith. Still, sometimes, I hear moments of genius, deftness amid the chaos. I can only think of two people even remotely in his league, and one of them is also gone. Part of the magic of the Who for me is how you all made a cohesive band out of four soloists! I think it must be due to some as-yet undiscovered physical force. Or dark matter? The ether? Who can say?
Thanks for the recording tips. My "studio" is my livingroom, half the time I'm checking signal gain on the interface to be sure I'm not picking up sirens or neighbors. Hard to concentrate on playing well in those conditions! I do my best. I am accustomed to setting up mics in controlled environments. I used to work as a assistant recording engineer during the summers when I was a teenager - can still set up Ampeg tape with my eyes closed (yes, pre-DAT!), so this is new territory for me. I need all the help I can get. Maybe I need to subscribe to Tape Op?
Anyway, thanks again for the tips and letting me know that Mac is ok. My heart just broke for him when I got the news as well as for myself and anyone who knew Kim. She glowed, didn't she?
